Share The Love- Hughes and Longfellow Host Used Clothing and Toy Drive

This very special fundraiser is taking place this Saturday February 25th from 11am-1pm at Hughes Middle School in Long Beach.

Drop off items on the Longfellow Upper Playground, on California Avenue between Bixby and Roosevelt. Goodthrift Used Clothing Recycling will pay the schools per pound for items collected while you recycle your old clothing and toys. Here is a list of items that can be donated:

Clothing
Accessories (purses, backpacks, hats, gloves, ties, scarves, belts, etc.)
Household fabrics (bedding, curtains, towels, bath mats, etc.)
Toys hard toys — (trucks, blocks, legos, etc. and YES — STUFFED ANIMALS and other soft toys are accepted!)

Super Kids Sunday 5K and Fun Run

Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and UC Irvine Pediatrics residents is sponsoring a Super Kids Sunday 5K and Fun Run March 4th. This event is to raise awareness on childhood obesity and encourage fitness and wellness for adults and children of all ages. Come out to Granada Beach in Long Beach for the expo even if you don’t want to race. Check out their website for all the details!

Volunteer in Red!: “30-Minute Beach Cleanup” to reward attendeeswearing red with chocolate, candy and cash.

“To honor heart health month and Valentine’s, the 30-Minute Beach Cleanup is going red for its 153rd consecutive monthly cleanup on Sat., Feb. 18, 10 a.m. Organizers are asking volunteers to wear red to the cleanup, and the reward for them will be chocolate and other candies at the conclusion of the cleanup. And, a very special cash prize will be given to the person wearing the best display of red. Organizers are also putting together the Red High Heel Walk on 2nd St. at noon that day, so volunteers are asked to participate in that event with their red clothes and shoes.”

Marketplace Long Beach Helps Sponsor Miss Long Beach

On her road to Palm Desert in the Miss California USA pageant Marketplace Long Beach was proud to sponsor Monique Villa.

Monique Villa entered her first pageant November 7th, 2010 and won the title of Miss Long Beach 2011. Joining just a week before, Monique did not have the pageant experience many of her competitors had, so she relied on her determination and diverse pool of experiences to set herself apart. The Miss Long Beach pageant is one of the oldest pageants in the world, started in 1950 leading to the very first Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants being held in Long Beach in 1952. As Miss Long Beach 2011, Monique quickly learned of her city’s rich history in the pageant world. She is proud to be representing Greater Long Beach in the upcoming Miss California USA 2012 pageant in Palm Desert, CA. “It is time I claimed the Miss USA crown on behalf of my city, especially since my hometown hosted the very first Miss USA pageant. After being Miss Long Beach for a year, the next step is to become the next Miss California USA and represent my state in the Miss USA pageant.”
Aside from being Miss Long Beach 2011, Monique is a 22-year old Senior at the University of California, Irvine where she built her own interdisciplinary major studying Visual Media in Convergence Culture. She quit three part-time jobs and left school for a semester in 2008 to complete a full-time internship at TOMS Shoes in Santa Monica, where she worked alongside the owner Blake Mycoskie. Monique is also a Productions Assistant for 89.9 KCRW in Santa Monica, where she works on Morning Becomes Eclectic with Jason Bentley. Currently juggling a full school load, two waitressing jobs, a bookkeeping job, volunteer work at KCRW and 50+ appearances as Miss Long Beach 2011, Monique has been preparing for Miss California USA 2012 in every moment she has available. “I have always volunteered for a wide array of community initiatives I can believe in. Between my continued volunteer work, occasional modeling and being 5’9”, it’s almost as if pageants found me. Now it is time to gear up for the big stage and show people who I am.”
Born and raised in Long Beach, CA, Monique is proud of her diverse background. Her father is Mexican-American and her mother is French, Scottish, Swedish, Irish, and Cherokee Indian. Monique recently moved back home to take care of her 77-year old father while she finishes her degree at UC Irvine. She started Project Give-A-Book last Christmas collecting new reading books for underprivileged children in her community. Recently, Monique was recognized by the California State Assembly as “30 Under 30” honoring thirty extraordinary women under the age of thirty who are excelling in California.
